Have you started bundling up your child for their walk to the bus stop or cranked on the heat because there’s a morning chill in your house? Winter is quickly approaching, so snuggle by the fireplace, cover up with a warm blanket and learn how to keep your child warm and safe over the winter season with Irving ISD’s Winter Tips.

BUNDLE UP AND STAY ALERT

Just like Frosty the Snowman wears a hat and scarf to stay warm, children should also dress appropriately for the weather, including wearing shoes with a grip for icy or rainy road conditions. Please make sure your child can see and hear through clothing to stay alert for traffic, listen for bus driver instructions and be aware of bus stop locations. Students should stay 3 to 5 feet away from the bus as it approaches and allow time for the bus to make a complete stop before entering.

SLIGHT DELAYS

Student safety is our top priority, so buses may need extra time to get from one location to the next. This act of caution may cause slight delays in picking up and dropping off students at bus stops.

If a child is assigned a regular bus route and is experiencing a 10- to 15-minute delay in pick-up or drop-up times, parents can call the bus dispatcher at 972-313-4628 and receive bus location updates. If a child is assigned a SPED bus route and is experiencing any delay in pick-up or drop-off times, parents can call the bus dispatcher at 972-313-4628 and receive bus location updates.

What you can expect from Irving ISD

SAFETY

Irving ISD’s top priority is our students’ safety. That’s why we have partnered with First Student Transportation, the largest student transportation company in the United States, to get our students safely to their locations. We follow these practices to ensure this safety:

  • Regular safety trainings with bus drivers
  • Daily pre-trip inspections on brakes, tires, mirrors, windshield wipers, etc.
  • Routine bus maintenance
  • Bus monitors for buses needing additional support

COMMUNICATION

Parents can call the bus barn at 972-313-4628 with any questions or concerns. A dispatcher will answer the phone. If there is severe weather, parents may expect delays in reaching a dispatcher because of the high call volume.

Irving ISD also provides timely communication when schools are delayed or closed for severe weather. Communication will be posted in different places as outlined above, so parents can receive information as soon as possible.

PARTNERSHIP

We value your partnership as we work together to ensure students stay safe. Thank you for entrusting us with your child. We love to say hi every morning at the bus stop and wave goodbye as they walk off the bus. It’s the best part of our day!
